Caption Remix, 5-6 August 2006, East Oxford Community Centre
CAPTION is the longest running, annual, UK comics convention, which is
held in Oxford by a bunch of comics fans and creators. Our focus is
British small-press and self-published comics, but naturally our
interests include comics and zines generally. Our attendees are as
much zine makers as zine consumers.
The convention theme this year is REMIX, which the committee defines
as taking something old and remixing it into something new, but you
can interpret it in any way you wish.
Some of the panels and highlights include:
• A discussion exploring the relationship between comics and music.
• A panel looking at how creators have taken myths, novels, short
stories, plays and turned them into comics.
• Writer/Artist speed dating.
• Hyper-comics pioneer Daniel Merlin Goodbrey.
Caption has a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere that puts the emphasis
on talking to and hanging around with friends, including those you
have yet to meet! For those of you that publish your own comics and
wish to sell them at the event, simply bring them along and leave them
on the Caption table. We will sell them on your behalf for a 10% fee,
leaving you free to enjoy the convention, attend panels, take part in
workshops and imbibe the ambience.
Owing to a change in the law regarding public events, Caption Remix
will be taking place at a new venue this year: the East Oxford
Community Centre. This is situated in the lively Cowley Road area,
which has plenty of restaurants and bars, and is easily accessible
from the centre of Oxford.
If you would like to get involved in Caption in any way, from running
a workshop to being on a panel, producing something for the exhibition
or being a gopher, then we would love to hear from you.
